Shapeshifting - A Shifter has the ability to change into an animal form at will. They gain whatever strength, speed, and other abilities that animal form may naturally have.
In Jane's case, she is able to shift into a large grey Huntsman spider.
Accelerated Healing - A shifter heals faster than humans and animals do, taking about half the time to recover from an injury. Example: if a human would take 8 days to recover from a physical injury the shifter would recover from that same injury in only 4 days.
Partial Shapeshifting - A skill that takes a shapeshifter a lot of time and training to develop. They are able to partly shift into their animal form. This can include external and internal changes, like morphing the insides of their ears into their animal’s in order to enhance their hearing.
In her case, Jane is able to partially shift the makeup of her skin to climb walls, she can inject painful, but not lethal, doses of venom by creating spider-like pincers around her mouth, or increase her visual range by creating more eyes across her face. It's also been noted that she is far more agile and quick than a normal human
Magical Prowess - A shifter is able to naturally use magic and feel an affinity for the craft. They do not need to worship any God or Demon to use magic but if they do not use an outside source then they can easily exhaust themselves.
Clairvoyance - As supernatural creatures, Shifters can see and hear ghosts the same way Vampires, Werewolves, and other ghosts can.
STORY SO FAR
Jane was a bit of an anomaly in the Monroe family, being the half-sister of Elizabeth Monroe from a different mother, who ended up being dropped off on the doorstep of the family home shortly after she was born. She was always a bit shunned because of that - being the ill-begotten child of a love affair - it becoming even odder in the family life when her true nature as a Shifter became apparent - but did her best to ignore it as she grew up and eventually would befriend Sawyer Grant.
She was never sure what it was, but Jane knew from the moment that she met Sawyer as a kid that they were meant to be together. Not romantically, though - she knew that from that day forward they were going to be partners in crime. She knew that without a shadow of a doubt that she could trust him with anything, and he would always have her back. Ultimately, she was right. And following in the steps of their fathers - they would begin working for the SIA, with Jane serving as Sawyer's loyal partner and defender as they sought to solve supernatural issues.
Up until Sawyer had to step away for a year after slaying the man who had killed his brother. Jane opted to take the year away as well, staying close to her friend. It was here, in this time, that Jane befriended Helen. Helen was the wife of the local pastor, and the two of them would meet in the mornings for coffee at Helen's home while her husband was out and about and working at the church. Jane was happy to keep her company - she was charming, and beautiful, and funny...
And it was all going great up until Helen kissed her, which rapidly escalated into them having sex.
The first time they claimed it was a mistake, but it ended up being a mistake that they would repeat consistently, and it became clear to both of them that there was more going on than some hidden desire - Jane and Helen were in love, and Helen was unhappy with her husband. It made Jane realize more than a few things about herself - and she would eventually confide in Sawyer about how scared she was, but the fact that she did - truly - love Helen. It was doomed from the start.
Eventually, Helen's husband caught them together, and Jane was chased out into the night - and only escaped when she reverted into a spider and made her way home that way. When she did, she was comforted by Sawyer - but it did little to make her feel better. The damage was done - Helen had said she never wanted to see her again, and the entire town knew that Jane was homosexual, with a narrative she told Helen to make up so she didn't receive the same heat that painted Jane as some monster. It led to her having to live entirely in hiding - because she couldn't just leave. Not Sawyer, or her sister. So she rarely left the house during the day, and even when she did regardless she would often opt to shift into a spider and hide within Sawyer's coat.
But then things changed again.
Elizabeth saw something.
The end of days - something awful happening nearly a century into the future, which startles Jane as her sister had never seen such a thing before. And Jane knew that she and Sawyer had to step in and do something. So when a spell was prepared, Jane refused to let Sawyer go solo, and she gave him time with Mary... before the two of them left behind everything they knew - not knowing that it would be premenant.
